The Director Identification Number (Director ID) is a unique identifier that all directors must apply for. This important compliance requirement is part of the Australian Government's efforts to prevent illegal phoenixing activity and improve corporate transparency.
What is a Director ID?
A Director ID is a 15-digit number that uniquely identifies you as a director. Once issued, you keep the same Director ID forever, even if you:
- Stop being a director
- Change companies
- Change your name
- Move interstate or overseas
Who Needs a Director ID?
You need a Director ID if you are, or will become, a director of:
- A company
- A registered Australian body
- A registered foreign company
- An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation
Application Deadlines
The deadline for applying depends on when you became a director:
- Directors appointed before 1 November 2021: Must apply by 30 November 2022
- Directors appointed between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022: Must apply by 30 November 2022
- Directors appointed from 5 April 2022: Must apply before appointment
How to Apply
There are three ways to apply for a Director ID:
- Online (Recommended): Apply at the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) website using myGovID
- Phone: Call 13 62 50 if you don't have a myGovID
- Paper: Complete a paper application form if you can't apply online or by phone
Information Required
To apply, you'll need to verify your identity using two documents from the following:
- Tax file number (TFN)
- Driver's licence
- Passport
- Birth certificate
- Medicare card
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Failing to apply for a Director ID by the deadline is a strict liability offence with penalties of up to $13,200. It's crucial to ensure compliance to avoid these significant penalties.
